Michelle's Story
Meet Michelle, CC her son and mom Juanita; they live in Bessemer, Alabama. In June of 2002, Michelle learned she had leukemia and is still undergoing treatments. Michelle is 26 years old and a single parent.
In Michelle's own words
"My leukemia was diagnosed on June 26, 2002. I was only 24 years old and my son CC was just 4 years old. I have been looking for a match for a bone marrow transplant since then, but I have been unsuccessful to date. There is no match for me even in my own family. I am in a race against time. I need your help."
Help us at Red Cross help Michelle and hundreds like her
During a twelve-hour drive on July 29 at Birmingham's Boutwell Auditorium, 90 people signed up for the National Bone Marrow Registry. That is a record number of registrants at one event in the American Red Cross Blood Services Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region. But people like Michelle need even more people to register.
A simple blood sample and bone marrow test helps determine if you could be a match for someone on the national bone marrow registry. There are 100 Alabamians on the list, hoping to find a match from someone in Alabama or anywhere in the U.S. so they can have a bone marrow transplant and survive.
