Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held on December 17

The volunteer luncheon for the southern half of the region was held December. 5, 2002 in Mobile at the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Memorial Park Pavilion. Both Blood Services and Gulf Coast Chapter (Mobile) volunteers were recognized for their contributions and tireless service to the American Red Cross.

On December 17, 2002, Blood Services volunteers for the northern half of Alabama gathered at the Tutwiler Hotel in downtown Birmingham for the Annual Volunteer Recognition. Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services CEO June Fletcher opened up the luncheon by thanking the volunteers for their continued dedication to touching more lives in new ways.  The volunteers received Certificates of Appreciation for their tireless efforts to serve Alabamians through the Red Cross.

The invocation for the meal was delivered by Gordon Garrett, a volunteer driver. The keynote speaker was Daniel Dunne, president of the United Way of Central Alabama.  Volunteers Amos Elam and Hosea Shepherd presented the service pins to those that served 5,10,15,20 or 25 years.  The John Carroll High School Choir led by Ken Berg entertained the group with delightful carols.

The following individuals received pins:
Five Year Pins: Vivian Osborne, Robert Walker, Ophelia Todd, Don Wasden
Ten Year Pins: Fletcher Thorington, Gordon Garrett, James Perry, Jane Smith, Mel Klevar
Fifteen Year Pins: Jack Smith, Carl Happer, Louis Jagoe
Twenty Year Pins: Venora Green, Dorothy Collins, Jay Collins
Twenty-Five Year Pins: Carol Bernheim

Thanks to all of our volunteers for all you do help the American Red Cross carry out its mission of serving our community.

Volunteer Opportunities

As a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, the American Red Cross needs you to help fulfill its mission to provide the safest, most reliable, cost-effective blood products to the American people through voluntary donations. There are numerous volunteer opportunities to help the American Red Cross Blood Services in Alabama.

Red Cross volunteers come from all walks of life! Volunteers can be scheduled during the week, weekends, or even at night. We realize the value of your time and knowledge and will work with you to find the best position best suited to your skills. Free training is provided for all volunteer opportunities.

Blood Service Volunteer

Blood Service volunteers assist at all blood drives and collection sites throughout Alabama. Volunteers register blood donors, work alongside paid staff in the donor room and assist in the refreshment area. These important positions are filled with wonderful, caring volunteers who help make the blood donation experience pleasant, efficient and satisfying to our donors.

Greeters

Blood Service volunteers assist at blood drives and collection sites by greeting and registering blood donors. They also escort donors through the donation to make the process efficient and pleasant for everyone.

Drivers

We have an urgent need for volunteer drivers. Volunteers transport blood from blood drives to the American Red Cross in downtown Birmingham. The drivers also deliver blood products to hospitals throughout the state of Alabama. Red Cross vehicles are used for these jobs. Volunteer drivers have the satisfaction of knowing they are helping someone every time they transport blood or blood products.

Hospitality Volunteer

To greet and assist volunteer blood donors, family and friends in the hospitality area cordially. Provide a warm friendly greeting to all donors.

Canteen Volunteer

Volunteers are needed in our canteen area to serve refreshments to our donors after they have donated blood.

Administrative Support

Our local offices may need you to assist with administrative and clerical duties. Tasks may include: scheduling volunteer coverage, bulk mailings, computer assistance, or planning special events.
