The Southern Region’s Immunohematolgoy Reference Laboratory provides quality services to ensure that the Red Cross delivers the safest and most reliable blood and blood products possible. Available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the Reference Laboratory staff is on hand to identify blood antibodies, resolve unusual blood types and find compatible blood for patients awaiting transfusions.
Each year, 2,400 blood samples are referred to the lab from hospitals for resolution of antibody problems. In addition, approximately 6,000 specially-typed red cell products are provided annually to hospitals in the region for transfusion.
For more specialized services, the American Red Cross Blood Services has national reference laboratories that provide centralized, comprehensive testing for specific blood needs.
