IN-HONOR OF BLOOD DRIVE TO BE HELD FOR LOCAL GIRL Sign-up now to give blood on Valentine’s Day at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Perry (Wednesday, Feb. 9 2005) Macon, Ga. – Valentine’s Day is a time when people go out of their way to do something nice for the people they care about. Typically, this involves giving that special someone flowers and candy. This Valentine’s Day, the American Red Cross is encouraging people to do something fantastic for someone they may not even know. Perry resident Amber Hunter, 8, is battling Aplastic Anemia, a rare but extremely serious disorder that results from the unexplained failure of the bone marrow to produce blood cells. Amber has received many blood transfusions, so her family and friends have decided to hold a drive in her honor to encourage people to donate on a regular basis. The blood donated at this drive will go to help children and adults who need transfusions for accidents and illnesses. For blood drive coordinator, Eunice Galloway, this cause is something she holds near and dear to her heart. In 1994, Galloway’s daughter Laura, 12, was diagnosed with leukemia. Although Laura fought a brave battle, receiving as many as 16 units of blood in one day, she passed away on January 15, 1996. She would have turned 14 on February 11. “I believe that Laura’s spirit will be especially with us this year on Valentine’s Day,” said Galloway. “Ever since Amber was admitted to Children’s in Macon, I have had a purpose-driven desire to help her and her family. Coordinating the blood drive is one way of helping not only Amber, but many others who will be in need of blood products as we once were and may be again one day.     Please make a Valentine’s Day date with the American Red Cross now and give the most precious and heartfelt gift of all, the gift of life.
